This includes the use of older members of society to do specific things on behalf of the community.

Here are some of the decisions that only the elderly can make regarding the lives of the younger generation.

1. Sickness

There are two types of disease in Luo Nyanza, as per the Luo traditions and beliefs, this being natural sicknesses and 'sent' diseases.

'Sent' sicknesses are those believed to have been influenced by actions of a jealous villager or a person one offended or stole from.

Therefore, when disease strikes and it appears to be the work of a witchdoctor or 'Ajuoga' of 'Jayath' in the Luo language, its time for related elders to meet and decide the way forward.

Such meetings are convened to decide whether to approach the man behind your woes and beg for forgiveness or take you to a stronger witchdoctor for treatment.

Its worth noting that most of these witchdoctors nowadays are licences and openly announce their services, and their services are not in any way illegal.

2. Marriage arrangements

Nowadays most young people would rather go and hunt for their life partners on their own unlike in the future where parents and other older relatives did the job.

But when it gets to a point that one brings a wife to the homestead and the parents do not approve of her or her behaviour, they will at times convene a meeting to discuss both of you.

They will then decide whether or not they will condone her in the homestead.

3. Domestic disagreements

At times there are disagreements on domestic issues which at times calls for the intervention of elders from both sides to solve the hostility.

Once a couple takes the matter to their parents and inlaws or other involved elderly relatives they will be discussed as the experienced members of the society deliberate on how best to solve the puzzle.
