Trouble started when Muranga Senator Irungu Kang'ata fronted Ruto in a region dominated by Odinga when he urged locals to back the DP in 2022 elections.

"Ruto has never competed with Raila. They have never differed and I urge you to back him in 2022," said Kang'ata.

But minutes later, Kang'ata, a close ally of President Uhuru Kenyatta, was forced to hurriedly cut short his speech when a section of youths heckled him.

ODM leader Raila Odinga who graced the occasion watched helplessly as mourners started chanting anti-Ruto slogans.

"If at all Central Kenya has a debt to pay, then let them start with Jaramogi Oginga Odinga who supported Jomo Kenyatta or even Raila who supported Mwai Kibaki," said Babu Owino.

Over the weekend, Ruto dismissed claims that the Central Kenya community owes him political debt.

Ruto is trying to make inroads in Nyanza region ahead of expected retirement of Raila, who has dominated the region for over three decades.
