A middle-aged woman is currently being held by police for allegedly neglecting her 2-months-old baby boy. Locals claimed that the woman identified as Rabera gave birth to her son but, she has been refusing to breastfeed him.
"Rabera gave birth and abandoned the baby at her home and went to work as a bar attendant. We made efforts to persuade her to breastfeed the child but all in vain," said a local Michael Moi.
Moi said the locals teamed up and reported the matter to police who apprehended the woman from a local bar where she has been working.
A local chief Raphael Orina confirmed the arrest and said the woman was frog-marched from the bar and surrendered to Kisii Central police station from where she will be taken to court.
"Child negligence is an offence which is punishable by law. Rabera must face the law to serve as an example to the rest of women who abandons their children," he said.
The chief advised parents to be responsible to avoid being in the wrong side of the law.
Orina said he will not condone parents neglecting their children to continue living in his area of jurisdiction.
