The court of Appeal in Mombasa has nullified the election of Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip.
This is after Loitiptip's opponent in the August 8, 2017 Hassan Albeity of Wiper Democratic Movement (who came in second) filed an appeal disputing the election results after the High Court overruled the first petition in February this year.
Three sitting judges Alnashir visram, Wanjiru Karanja and Martha Koome on Thursday cited election irregularities and directed that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) should conduct fresh senatorial election in Lamu County within three months.
The former banker who vied on a Jubilee party ticket garnered 14,432 votes against Albeity's 14,374 votes.
After the ruling, Loitiptip failed to address the press and rushed to the hospital from the court.
The dethroned lawmaker is said to have gone to check on his ailing mother.
He was represented by lawyer Yusuf Aboubakar.
