Kenya African National Union (KANU) party is more hopeful than before that they can bounce back to power.
Kanu received a humiliating defeat from power in 2002 when its then chairman Daniel Moi was retiring as president.
Moi, in his ‘giraffe wisdom’, picked Uhuru Kenyatta as his heir.
This angered other season politicians led by Raila Odinga who led a coup against KANU.
There was a mass exodus of politicians from the ‘Chama ya baba na mama’ to the opposition.
Interestingly, 16 years later after the death of Kanu, the party hopes the same man who murdered it will bring it back to life.
The man is none other Raila Amollo Odinga. A man described as an enigma in Kenya’s politics.
Central Organisation of Trade Union (COTU) secretary general Francis Atwoli once said Raila enjoys a cult-like political following which he dubbed ‘suicidal following’.Sources within KANU said there is a ‘new love’ between Raila and KANU.
“The partnership between Raila and Gideon is real. It will be dynasties versus hustlers,” Moi’s ally William Kamket was on Monday quoted by the Daily Nation.
While touring Raila’s stronghold over the weekend, Gideon left all the hints that he will pair up with the opposition chief ahead of the 2022 poll.
“After the handshake, Raila and I are one thing,” Moi said.
KANU believes with Raila, they win easily win the 2022 elections and beat Deputy President William Ruto who has announced his 2022 bid for the presidency.
The strategy is to revenge on Ruto for apparently upstaging Mzee Moi in 2007 as the Rift Valley kingpin.
Politicians backing a Moi-Raila reunion have been trooping to Mzee Moi's Kabarak home in Nakuru for political discussions.
