Uasin Gishu County Assembly Speaker David Kiplagat has hit out at politicians who are pushing for a constitutional change through a referendum.
Speaking to the press in Eldoret town on Thursday, Kiplagat said Kenyans are not ready for a referendum while pointing out that it’s time to work for the electorate and not to politic.
“I don’t see the need to change the constitution at the moment since it has not lasted for even 6 years. Why should we subject Kenyans to politics every now and then?” said the County Assembly Speaker.
“We should not be discussing politics after every election just because somebody did not win an election and now wants a referendum for some seats to be created for him. We won’t allow that,” he added.
Kiplagat further pointed out that politics will not benefit Kenyans in any way and called on elected leaders to focus on development and the realization of the Jubilee government's Big Four Agenda.
“Surely when will we work for the electorates if what we eat and drink from morning to evening is politics?” he asked.
Calls for a referendum being spearheaded by the opposition -allied leaders seems to be gaining momentum with leaders from across the political divide expressing mixed reactions.
