Renowned journalist Larry Madowo has paid his tribute to the late Binyavanga Wainaina, a Kenyan writer and LGBT activist renowned internationally.
In a tweet after news of the writer's death, Madowo eulogized Binyavanga as a public intellectual that the world needed.
"Binyavanga Wainaina was the public intellectual we needed but didn't deserve. The world is worse off today without him to challenge our prejudices & defend the humanity of everyone. And now his watch is ended," Madowo tweeted.
The news of Binyavanga's death was confirmed by his family.
"We are in a life celebration mood, we're looking at this from a human level; it's a human story. Allow that humanness to shine, people are hurting," his brother told the media.
Binyavanga's creative writing saw him win international accolades, including the Caine Prize for African writing in 2002.
Fans across the world have been paying their tributes to Binyavanga, a writer who divided opinion in Kenya over his sexual orientation.
