After a dramatic loss of 1-0 to Colombia in their final Group H match, Senegal tied in points and goals with Japan. They had 4 goals each with no goals on aggregate.

However, given that Senegal had many yellow cards, 6 yellow cards while Japan had only 4, they were eliminated on the virtue of disciplinary record.

It was a painful exit for the only Africa team standing in the tournament. They only needed a draw to remain in the tournament, but gave away this golden opportunity just too many time, when they could have even scored.

The Senegalese had their first-half penalty overturned on the 17th minute when the Liverpool striker, Sadio Mane was brought down by a rough challenge from Colombia defender Davinson Sanchez.

The referee, Milorad Mazic pointed to the spot, but after checking the review from the VAR, he overturned his initial decision. They controlled the goal for the rest of the match until the first half ended in a barren draw.

They conceded a corner kick at the 74th minute. Poor marking left Yerry Mina with all the opportunity to score a stunning header.
