Members of the Luo community have remained rooted in their traditions, norms and beliefs, passed down from generation to generation.
Some of these traditions are believed to be so compulsory, that going against them is believed to result to some sort of curse known as 'chira' in Dholuo, which will with time result to death (thoo).
Here are some of the reckless behaviours that are considered deadly in Luo land.
1. Sitting on parents' bed after sex
Luos are on most occasions not allowed into their parents' bedrooms, unless it is very necessary.
This worsens when one has just had sex elsewhere before trooping into their parents' bedroom and sits on the bed without taking a shower, as this will contaminate the bed and kill the parent or parents once they sleep on it.
2. Touching a tilled land
In Nyanza, you do not touch a piece of land that another person has already tilled, regardless of whether the first person only struck the land once with his hoe.
This too results to death, as most people never come to know that there was a person who was there initially.
Its also popular in cases of land disputes and is known as 'riwo loo' (land confusion) in Dholuo.
3. Bilo
Bilo is a form of traditional witchcraft which operates almost similarly to the popular Illuminati rhetoric, where the person with the powers is supposed to feed the evil powers.
Though they usually have powers to help others for a fee, these doctors (jo-bilo) usually end up alone after losing their family to the devils, while at the same time killing people on clients' requests.
