On Thursday, Dr Ruto revisited his humble beginnings, recalling how he did his final exam for primary school without putting on shoes. According to him, he first bought his shoes in 1981.

"In 1980 when I was in standard 7 preparing for CPE, I went to do exams barefoot. It was nature. My first shoe was bought in 1981 for Sh60. I am saying this because the gentleman who didn't have shoes is sitting at the high table today," Dr Ruto said.

Keter, however, faulted the DP over his continued use of hustler tag, arguing that even he also grew up in a difficult environment before achieving his current status.

"I equally grew up from a humble background, but I don’t subscribe to the thinking that we thank God because he has made us to have material things like shoes and to have also blessed us to ascend to high political offices, but we have every reason to thank him for the gift of life," said Keter.

Previously, Dr Ruto has often demonstrated his humble beginnings, recalling how he used to struggle with life at Dagoretti Corner years back.

"When am in Dagoretti, I remember a lot. I used to stay at Ngano. During that time, I used to pay a monthly rent of Sh1,750. Even my landlady used to be a good person. One of these fine days I'll give her a courtesy call," recalled Ruto.

It's at Dagoretti South, Ruto said, he used to invite his future wife Rachael Ruto for dates. Later, the two married and settled in the constituency that is now under the leadership of John Kiarie.

"My wife and I used to come here for dates and we would later marry. Our first child was born here in Dagoretti South. So I have a history in this area," added the DP, amid cheers from the crowd.

Keter, Moiben's Silas Tiren, and  Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny are among leaders from Rift Valley have lately gone ballistic against Dr Ruto.
