COTU boss Francis Atwoli has found himself under more pressure to apologize after he made remarks that have been taken as an insult to members of the Kikuyu community.

Speaking at the St Stephens ACK Church in Nairobi on Sunday, Atwoli bashed the community leadership for entertaining political intimidation, terming them 'Washenzi' (idiots).

In reference to the ongoing wars within the ruling Jubilee Party, he wondered why President Uhuru Kenyatta is allowing himself to be allegedly intimidated by his deputy William Ruto, regarding his truce with opposition leader Raila Odinga.

“We can’t have two centres of powers in the same government. Na nyinyi Wakikuyu wa kisasa, nyinyi ni washenzi sana. Aliyesema Mwai Kibaki tosha alikuwa Raila. Wakaandikana MoU. Raila aliitwa kule Sagana kama Cabinet imekiwhisha akaambiwatake this or leave it. So tell President Uhuru Kenyatta he should not be intimidated.

(You Kikuyus of nowadays are uncivilised. Even Raila Odinga who declared his support for former President Mwai Kibaki was only invited to Sagana State Lodge after the Cabinet was formed and told to either take the positions offered to him or to leave. So, tell President Uhuru Kenyatta that he should not be intimidated),” said Atwoli.

But the Muranga County Assembly youth wing is now threatening to steer a walkout of people from Mt Kenya from the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) over the same.

“Mr Atwoli must understand that majority of Cotu contributors are from this region and by insulting them he is just unthankful. We shall convince them to move out of the union,” their leader, Habile Chege , told the Nation.

Muranga County Assembly Majority Leader Erick Kamande also warned of dire consequences, including protests, against what he termed as downgrading the community.

“Let him be warned, we shall disrupt his meeting should he fail to apologise and we will follow it up with mass protests,” he said.

This comes barely a fortnight after Atwoli landed in trouble once again for making remarks indicating that Ruto might not love to see the 2022 presidential elections.
