The family of former Garissa Finance minister Idriss Mukhtar, who is battling for his life in Intensive Care Unit (ICU), is now pleading for help from Kenyans.

The family says that Mukhtar’s condition has not improved and he is still in a coma six months after he survived an attempted murder.

Speaking to journalists in Nairobi on Thursday, the former Minister’s father, Adan Mukhtar said his son’s condition has not improved.

“He (Idriss) is still unconscious with a bullet lodged in his head,” Adan told reporters on Thursday.

The family says that it is expensive to take care of Mukhtar after doctors revealed that it will be too risky to remove the bullet in his head.

According to the family, Mukhtar’s trip to India and back cost them over Sh8 Million.

“We used over Sh8 Million as (travel expenses only) to go to India for specialised treatment but we came back because the doctors said there is nothing they can do to help my son,” he said.

Adan said they have now created an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and hired specialised doctors to nurse Mukhtar at his home.

“Kenyans should stand with us in prayer and any other form of help to help us take care of Mukhtar,” he said.

The former minister’s father said the family is financially drained, adding that Mukhtar’s wife and three children are in depression.

Mukhtar, 34, survived an attempted murder when he was sprayed with bullets in Nairobi’s Kileleshwa area in August 2018.

Two suspects have since been charged in court in connection with the attempted murder.

Mukhtar’s family has been accusing investigators of allegedly slowing down the case.

Last year, Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji refuted claims that the case is being delayed.

Haji said his office is yet to receive investigation report from the police.
