The four accused persons are Mr Abdi Malack Liban, a driver with Desert Cruiser Bus Company, his conductor, Mr Maulid Nuno Hassan, Ms Gibey Mohumed Adan and Ms Sowda Isman Jella.

Police officers arrested the four suspects on October 16 aboard a Nairobi-bound bus on the outskirts of Mandera town.

State counsel told the court that another suspect involved in human trafficking managed to escape police arrest.

A police officer at Mandera Police Station, Happi Mohamed Noor, in a sworn affidavit told the court that the four were evading police checks to avoid being detected.

The court heard that the two women passengers who are suspected to be Somalia nationals were found in possession of Kenyan identification cards.

The police asked the court to grant them more time to investigate the matter and to trace the real owners of the two ID cards.

Ms Adan and Ms Jella failed to explain how they obtained the two IDs but Ms Adan told the court that she is an Ethiopian national and she was given the ID when she arrived in Mandera town.

Ms Jella who said she is 16-years-old told the court that she had worked in Mandera town as a house help but was headed to Nairobi.

Mandera Resident Magistrate Dancun Mtai granted the police more time and directed that the four suspects be held at Mandera Border Post Police Station.

The case will be mentioned on October 23.
