The late Mohamed Juma Njuguna was a rare breed in the current media landscape, Royal Media Services (RMS) boss SK Macharia has said of veteran journalist who died on Saturday.
In a message of condolence to the family, relatives and colleagues, Macharia mourned Njuguna as a dedicated and loyal member of RMS family, whose contribution to the growth of the company will forever be remembered.
In a statement to the press, the media tycoon termed the demise of the highly decorated sports journalist as a devastating, and painful blow to Citizen Radio, where he worked as content producer, and to the whole media house.
“Njuguna was not only a dedicated member of the Royal Media family but fiercely loyal to the brand, a rare breed in the current media landscape. He was among the founding members of Radio Citizen in 1999 and remained committed to the cause even during the trying times,” Macharia said in a statement also signed by his wife Gathoni Macharia, the RMS vice-chairperson.
The veteran sports commentator passed on at the Nairobi Hospital where he was undergoing treatment for diabetes and high blood pressure.
He was on Saturday evening laid to rest at the Kariokor Muslim Cemetery, in a funeral service that was attended by his family, friends and colleagues in the media industry.
RMS Group Managing Director Wachira Waruru eulogised Njuguna as a friend and a broadcasting icon who was very passionate for his work.
“I am deeply saddened; the country has lost a broadcasting icon, who demonstrated the highest level of commitment and passion for his work. I have lost a dear friend and colleague. May his soul rest in peace,” said Waruru.
