"Remember the below before you vote: The people of Ukraine elected a comedian. The people of Madagascar elected a DJ. The people of Liberia elected a footballer. So musiogope hizi BIG names na kupangwa na TANGATANGA ama KIELEWEKE politics. Leadership comes from God. Hata tukidunda hapa. God willing after 2027 make sure tuko NDANI, NDANI, NDANIIIIII KABISAA!!!" he posted.

The upbeat message was posted on Monday on the governor's Facebook page where he commands a huge following of over one million followers, declaring his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.

When it comes to following, he is up there with the likes of President Uhuru, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, and Deputy President William Ruto.

With a robust social media strategy up his sleeves, he believes he can pull off an upset victory against the more seasoned politicos with presidential ambitions.

Sonko seems to appreciate the important role that social media plays in contemporary politics, inspired by a litany of examples across the world where social media messaging has played a defining role in elections.

Politicians with robust social media strategies seem to be winning elections these days.

The landslide victory of Volomydyr Zelenskiy, a comedian with zero political experience in recently-held elections in Ukraine, was largely credited to his 'superior' social media strategy.

President Trump who won the US presidency rallied his support base on Twitter to great effect.

Governor Sonko is arguably the biggest user of Facebook among the 47 governors.

He posts messages almost daily on his feed which his followers are quick to react to.

Every now and then, he engages directly with them in the comment section, a tactic that seems to excite those flocking to his page to post comments.

It is a deliberate way of endearing himself to the electorate, and making supporters feel that they are close to him.

Voters tend to vote for leaders that they feel are closer to them, a concept that the flamboyant governor seems to have grasped.

Robustly engaging with voters enables him to gauge their mood, and thinking which helps inform his wider political strategy.

Given that he does not have control over all media houses, social media enables him to shape his own narrative.

He seems to understand when social media users are online, and it is not unusual to run into a livestream on his Facebok page at night.

The language he employs in these livestreams and posts is simple, and geared mostly towards the youth who make the bulk of the voters.

Sheng is becoming a staple of his messaging on social media, which makes him more attractive to the youngsters.

Clearly, the Nairobi governor is keen on leveraging on the huge following he commands on social media, to win the 2027 presidential election which he has hinted at contesting.
