Abdi Hirey, the victim of police brutality has been admitted at the Garissa Referral Hospital where he is in a critical condition.

According to Abdulrahman Abdi who is his caretaker son, the elderly father was brutally assaulted on Sunday evening by uniformed officers drawn from Garissa police station.

The police are said to have been on board a GK Land Cruiser.

"Mzee Hirey was going on his routine duties on Sunday evening. A police vehicle of registration number GK 780K passed by him before several officers alighted and started beating him up for no clear reason," Abdi revealed.

Hirey sustained serious injuries on the head and hands.

He is now calling on the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) to take up the matter and conduct speedy investigations in the incident.

This comes even as police in Mandera have been accused of gross violations of human rights as they deal with terrorism and radicalization in the region that witnessed a series of attacks.
