The city is currently considered one of the best tourism destinations in the nation, tempting many Kenyans to go and have a look at what amazes many in the western city.

Whether for the holidays or to visit a friend or relative, here are the things you should know, especially if you are landing in the lakeside city for the first time.

1. Very politically sensitive

Kisumu is predominantly an opposition bedrock, sitting well within the Luo Nyanza province, a place where opposition leader Raila Odinga is the king and ultimate political chief.

Though the region has no problem with people having a different political belief and allegiance, it is advisable that you practice your political belief without undermining theirs.

For new visitors, keep your political view to yourself and do not try to make the people share it or try to out it over theirs, this could render you an outcast.

2. A city like any other, be careful

This is a city like any other, complete with cons, pickpockets, thieves and other criminals.

If you happen to be visiting for the first time, do not assume that it is only in Nairobi that we have such people, watch your stuff and keenly analyze the people you ask for directions.

Do not buy stuff from suspicious looking persons in the streets as you might be conned and instead, go to established shops where you can always come back should need be.

3. Avoid stereotyping the locals

There are a number of stereotypes used in a bid to describe Luos, the majority in his city and the larger Kisumu County.

Do not rely on what you have heard about the people as though some are good, others might be offensive and upsetting.

Consequently, locals might react by denying you the support you might need, considering that you are new in the city.
