While Dr Matiang'i is yet to declare any political interest, a number of leaders led by Governor John Nyagarama are pushing for his entry into national politics.

During the burial of Dr Hezron Manduku a couple of weeks ago, Dr Matiang'i was cautious about the calls, only insisting that he will focus on service delivery.

"I know what you want me to declare but not now. I am helping President Uhuru Kenyatta to deliver his promises to the people of Kenya," he said.

But Mr Samuel Okemwa, a harsh critic of Gusii leaders, insists that Dr Matiang'i will not come anywhere near presidency, adding that Gusii leaders should 'stop dreaming'.

According to him, the career civil servant is a political tool for President Uhuru Kenyatta and could be dropped in future when the mission is accomplished.

"Matiangi will not be president. Presidents in Kenya are not elected to serve people but to serve cartels's interests. Introducing Huduma number and fighting gambling can't make a person from a minority tribe elected president Uhuru and Raila have never said either privately or publicly that they will endorse Matiangi in 2022 but Omgusii has decide to imagine, dream," he said.

"Matiangi is Uhuru's political tool that he is using to fight his enemies. Matiangi is not different from PS Hezekiah Oyugi, Nicholas Biwott or Murungaru. All this people were made powerful but later disappeared like a morning fog," he added in a text.

The powerful minister has assembled a number of leaders from Nyamira, and the team has been moving around countering DP William Ruto's camp.

There are claims that Dr Matiang'i will eventually run for Borabu seat in preparation to be appointed Deputy Prime Minister in 2022 after constitutional amendments.
