For 20 years now, Jane Wambui has been battling diabetes.
After 19 years of being in and out of the hospital, she was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), also commonly referred to as kidney failure.
This was bad news for her family because the treatment for diabetes had already dented the family’s resources to a point where they were surviving on the goodwill of relatives and friends.
Jane now needed to make two trips every week, from the family’s home in Mang’u, Kiambu, to Kenyatta National Hospital for dialysis.
The doctors advised that instead of having a lifetime of dialysis, it would be better for Jane to go through a kidney transplant.
The family needed to raise Sh2.5 million for the procedure.
Jane’s son, Solomon, created an M-Changa account to crowdfund for the money.
He created a poster and shared with his WhatsAapp contacts.
When Hivisasa writer Brian Eliani saw the poster on WhatsApp, he knew that by highlighting the story on Hivisasa, he would get it to be read further and wider and increase the chances of the family raising the money that they need.
Brian reached out to Solomon who told him that as at that moment, the crowdfunding had raised a total of Sh18,000.
Brian gathered all the information he needed from the family and published an article. The family then shared the piece on their social media pages and by the time this article is being published, the M-Changa account has raised Sh185,000.
Solomon has been identified as a donor match for his mother and all he wants now is to hit the target amount so that the life-saving procedure can be done for his mother.
If you want to donate you can also send the money via M-Pesa pay bill 891300 account name, Janewambui, or Equitel pay bill 891300 business number JaneWambui.
