With the initial investigation implicating government forces, Mamfe Diocese lead Bishop Andrew Nkae, on Friday gave blow by blow account on how Fr Omboto met his death.

"Father Omboto was deployed to Cameroon in 2017 March after being ordained by Bishop Joseph Mairura. He was assigned St Martins Tours Parish in Kembong.

"By 2017 December, the security deteriorated in the region forcing over 5,000 people to flee. In the spirit of giving them hope, he insisted returning in April 2018 and I can confirm that many returned to start their life. And on Wednesday, he was shot dead," he narrated.

A whopping 21 bullets were fired at the church where the priest was at the time of incident by people believed to be government soldiers.

The government is trying to contain separatists, mainly anglophones who want independence from francophone dominance in Cameroon.

Bishop Joseph Mairura termed the death as tragic and asked Christians to remain hopeful and optimistic.

"It's a loss not only to Gusii but to the entire world. He was my student and I am saddened by the tragic death," he told reporters on Wednesday.
