The two groups are reported to have been fighting over parking space after both were ejected from their initial stages and moved to new ones.

These changes are said to have been in line with the county government's bid to decongest the town.

The situation has reportedly been simmering since the start of the changes three months ago.

It reportedly worsened on Wednesday when taxi drivers are reported to have assaulted a bodaboda rider who had parked at their stage.

This drove other riders to protest the same, riding around the town in search of the people who assaulted their colleague to revenge.

Police officers were forced to fire in the air to disperse the irate riders after they attacked the home of a suspected driver and assaulted his relatives.

According to Nyabisawa Chief Bernard Alila, the angry group invaded the home of Mzee Okero, the driver's father and wanted to burn down property in the homestead in retaliation.

"News of the tension in town reached us and we managed to get police officers who arrived at the homestead just as bodaboda riders were assaulting family members,” the administrator told the Nation.

The police also lobbed teargas canisters in a bid to disperse the attackers, a situation that forced the county leadership to convene a meeting with the two groups in search of solutions.
