Third Way Alliance Party Leader Ekuru Aukot has raised alarm over the government's growing appetite for loans, noting that the situation is getting out of hand.
Speaking on Tuesday, the former presidential candidate noted that the county's debt has grown to Sh6 trillion, which he said will require extra efforts to be managed.
He stated that so dire is the situation that every Kenyan now owes the debtors, including unborn babies whom he said owe Sh120, 000 to the loan providers.
"Deni yetu sasa iko Sh6 trillion. Hata mimba inadaiwa Sh120, 000 (our debt now stands at Sh6 trillion. Even a pregnancy owes Sh120, 000 to the debtors)," he said.
He termed the issue as one of the matters the party seeks to solve through its referendum push which seeks to reduce elective seats, which will inturn reduce the wage bill and save money.
He noted that his party's Punguza Mizigo initiative is aimed at reducing the number of elective seats in order to save the nation billions of shillings that can be channelled to cover some part of the loan.
He urged Kenyans to support the initiative that has since been presented to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
"Chama chetu kinaangazia jinsi ya kupunguza mizigo. Na ndio tunataka wakenya watuunge mkono (our party seeks to reduce the burden heaped on Kenyans and this is why we want them to support our initiative)," he said.
