A 17-year-old girl from Taracha area in Kisii County died on Monday at Keumbu hospital where she was receiving treatment following a failed abortion.
Confirming the incident area chief Kennedy Atemba said the deceased tried to terminate her pregnancy when things turned worse.
"The late was pregnant but, due to pressure from her mother, she attempted to terminate the pregnancy in vain. Villagers rushed her to Keumbu hospital for treatment after she collapsed," noted the chief.
Mr. Atemba said the deceased died at the facility while being attended to by the medics.
"She could not survive because she lost a lot of blood during the abortion. Her mother who had directed her to terminate the pregnancy has since gone into hiding but we are tracing her to face the law," he noted.
He assured that body was moved from Keumbu hospital to Kisii Teaching and referral hospital morgue as the search for her mother is ongoing.
The chief warned parents against forcing their daughters to abort pregnancies saying abortion is illegal and punishable by law.
"Parents should stop misleading their children more especially girls," he stated.
