Everyone everywhere has their own ways of how they spend their free time.
However, the kind of hobby that one decides to engage in may sometimes be defined by the kind of finances that they have.
In Thika for instance, you can easily tell the depth of many youth pockets based on how they spend their free time in or outside the estates.
Let's focus on four hobbies that many Thika youth engage in and how each defines the financial capabilities of the youth who engage in it.
1. Clubbing
This involves going to nightclubs and drinking till dawn. Among Thika youth, this is a common phenomenon on weekends or during end month where you will find many of them in pubs ordering rounds of drinks like the world is coming to an end.
Many of these youth are salaried and end month is their harvest time. The warmth of the cash in their pockets motivate them to party like animals. But after the cash is finished, they disappear to obsurity till another end month comes. Their pockets are only full during this time.
2. Miraa chewing
Youth in this hobby flock the hundreds of muguka or miraa bases around Thika town estates almost on a daily basis.
These are mostly daily or weekly wages workers in local factories or construction sites. Many sports bettors and gamblers are also to be found in this hobby. The depth of their pockets depends on the returns they get from their respective income generating activities.
3. Playing games like pool, dart, football among others
Most of the youth in this hobby are mostly high school leavers who finished school not so long ago. They could also be continuing students in local institutions of higher learning.
The school mentality is still much in them and they are yet to discover other hobbies outside what the school system taught them. They mostly have shallow or empty pockets.
4. Watching movies
Many youth in this hobby are the reclusive and reserved type who mostly enjoy their free time while alone. They barely leave their houses during these free time and, therefore, it is very hard to tell about the depth of their pockets.
However, there are those who say that they are usually as broke as a church rodent.
