However, an interaction with Kenya National Library Service Nakuru branch manager Purity Kavuri Mutuku paints a different picture.

Born 40 years ago in a village in Embu County in a family of 10, Mutuku says she had an interest in books as early as her first years at Kangaru primary school.

Her interest in books saw her win the first award while in class five.

The librarian says she wanted to be a journalist to shape the society through broadcasting information.

However, her high school life changed the dream after she was appointed as the school librarian.

After secondary, she joined Kenya Polytechnic for a diploma in Library and Information Science.

Her father was however against her pursuing the field.

“My daughter, you mean you just decided to go study on how to arrange books?” she remembers her dad asking.

Her journey as a librarian in Nakuru’s KNLS began in 2014.

Mutuku has since won various awards among them one on innovation in Africa which she won in 2016 while in Denmark.

Her parting shot: “This is a unique profession with many openings as long as you have passion”.
