The biometric staff audit also showed that 48% of county employees will retire within the next 10 years as they are over 50 years old.

Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui has promised a legal action after unmasking those behind the ghost workers.

“The audit unearthed that 23 people were not accounted for and I have directed they be removed immediately from the payroll. The County will take legal action on this matter because the total annual pay for the 23 is Sh26million,” Kinyanjui said.

This means every ghost worker was on average earning up to Sh90 000 per month.

Details were scanty in which department(s) these ghost employees were sucking the public coffers from.

The report also unmasked the irony of county employees in the department of agriculture who are stationed in air-conditioned offices within Nakuru town when their duties are in the interior parts where they are supposed to aid farmers.

The county boss said such employees will be deployed to the farms to do their job.
