Even as police intensified search to have her arrested, Ms Lilian Maina is still being celebrated by a section of Nyamira residents after allegedly stealing Sh5.1 million from octogenarian Simon Nyachae's house.
Affidavits sworn by investigators in court shows that Ms Maina took advantage of Grace Wamuyu's forgetfulness before running away with the money.
Wamuyu, the wife to Nyachae, reportedly failed to secure keys to a safe in her bedroom on September 28 before jetting out of the country for UK to check on her ailing husband.
"I don't encourage theft but the maid should have run away with more. How can someone with a bank store such amount of money in a house? This is evidence of looting," Daphine Moke wrote on Gusii Elites WhatsApp group.
Another user, Lameck Oteri added: "The maid showed us a clue on who is stealing from the public. You can't hide such amount of money in the house. She should be rewarded by the state."
Upon returning on October 7, the couple could not locate the huge sum of money that was lying idle in the house.
With Maina running away to unknown locations, some critics of Nyachae accused him of being mean.
"Five million is very little money. This dude stole a lot and did little in Gusii. He thrives on clanism and divisions. The maid was right to steal," added Philip Onkundi.
Since 1992, Nyachae controlled Gusii politics before unceremonious exit in 2007 after losing to little known Robert Monda.
He has been in London for treatment after his health deteriorated on April this year. He is 86 years old.
