Even before her compatriots formally accept her victory, Ms. Bernadette Ogega, the newly crowned Miss Tourism Nyamira County, has a rich, albeit controversial history.
It all started at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology where fellow campus boys feared dating her on pretext that she was too expensive to maintain.
“They all fear me. They fear dating me on grounds that I am too expensive,” says the outgoing MMUST beauty queen.
The narrative, she argued, may have been coined from her expensive campaigns to clinch Miss Campus MMUST in 2017 in which she roughly used Sh1 million.
And perhaps inspired with the prejudices exhibited by Kenyan men, Ms. Ogega, an alumni of the prestigious Kereri Girls, shifted her allegiance to white men.
“Kenyan men are stingy. That’s why they avoid models. Foreigners can easily give you Sh200,000 even if what you asked for was just Sh100,000— and they don’t question why you need the money,” said Benita who is 21 years old and has been dating Caucasians.
Over the weekend, Ms. Ogega was crowned Miss Tourism Nyamira County, a move that may have angered county residents.
With the competition taking place in Nairobi, Trade and Tourism minister Peter Muga claimed that he wasn't aware of it.
"I am not aware perhaps we get clarification from director or Chief Officer," he said.
But organisers claimed the county was not willing to conduct the exercise thus, the decision to convene it in Nairobi.
The 21-year-old lady, a business woman per excellence, hails from Mekenene ward, Borabu Sub County.
