Police in Naivasha are investigating an incident where a female suspect committed suicide inside Mai Mahiu Police station holding cells.
The woman was reportedly facing charges of selling illicit brew, after she was nabbed selling an illegal brew in Mai Mahiu town.
She is said to have used a scarf which she tied to the grill once she was left alone in the room.
The incident was confirmed by Naivasha OCPD Samuel Waweru, who said that an inquest file has been opened.
"In the suicide case we have opened an inquest file though initial investigations indicate that the woman committed suicide using her scarf,” he told the Sunday Standard.
A relative of the deceased expressed shock, wondering why she had to die in police custody yet her offence was a minor one.
“The mother of two was arrested for selling chang’aa and we expected her to be arraigned in court on Monday only to receive a call that she had committed suicide,” he said.
This comes barely a month after another suspect committed suicide under the same circumstances in the same area.
The man suspected of assaulting his wife and child committed suicide inside Karagita Police Post cells hours after being booked in.
