Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has revealed why he is fond of recording his private phone conversations with other people and later leaking them on social media.
Recently, Sonko leaked a recorded private phone conversation that he had with Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu after his wife was arrested over putting up constructions without the approval of the Nairobi County Government (NCG).
Waititu, in the recorded conversation, can be heard incessantly begging Sonko to intervene to have his wife released.
Sonko, speaking on Citizen TV's Monday Special news programme in a recorded interview, said that he records calls as a way of 'curbing impunity'.
"Waititu is my good friend and I didn't mean any malice by recording him. I told him the law is law and must be followed to the letter. At the end of the day his wife, Susan Ndung’u, was charged in court," Sonko said.
Sonko, however, noted that they (NCG) have asked Waititu's wife to present her plans to them for approval saying his government has no problem with Waititu or his wife investing in Nairobi.
"I just wanted to prove Waititu wrong. One day he was criticising us and the next day he was pleading with us. In the end, I followed the law. Building plans must be approved by the county government," said Sonko.
Asked whether he does not think that his habit of recording his private phone conversations with other people diminishes the Office of the Governor, Sonko was quick to reply that he breaks no law by doing so.
