The students were protesting over alleged harassment by police.

The protests forced the police to swing into action and restore calm, as daily operations in the area were being affected.

According to Maseno University Communications Director Owen Mc’Onyang’o, the students were protesting over the detention of their colleagues.

He said the particular students had gone to Maseno Police Station to report after one of their colleges was attacked by unknown people on Saturday night.

“They went to make a report about some of their colleagues who were attacked by thugs. While at the police station, they disagreed with the officers who then detained them. The students saw the detention as another attack and started protesting," he told the Nation.

The arrested students were later released, after which calm was restored.
