A primary teacher has been found guilty of executing a brutal punishment on a class one pupil four years ago that saw the minor injured.
This was after the pupil reported to school late.
The teacher identified as Ms Catherine Karanja is said to have been teaching at Vetlab Primary School in Kabete in 2014 when she assaulted the pupil.
Magistrate Elizabeth Juma noted that corporal punishment was banned and thus the suspect acted out of her limits.
“This is a straightforward case. You contravened the law and guidelines of your profession. You went ahead to mete corporal punishment to a pupil knowing that the same had been banned,” noted the magistrate.
The child's parents were among the four witnesses during the case hearing who had accompanied their child when he was beaten up.
In her ruling, the magistrate recommended that the teacher should have sought consultation from parents on why the pupil was late instead of unleashing brutality.
“You did not bother to enquire from the parents why the child reported to school late. You should have given him alternative punishment as required by the law,” the magistrate said.
Ms Karanja said that she was remorseful but the court ordered for a pre- sentence report to be presented on July 13 when she will be sentenced.
“I am sorry for what happened. It was an unfortunate incident in my 30 year service as a teacher. I will not repeat the same,” said the remorseful Catherine.
