Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior now wants a referendum to be held in 2020.
Kilonzo Junior said the referendum proposal must be studied and scrutinized by both the National Assembly and the Senate before being subjected to a vote.
He said Kenyans should not be rushed to vote in a referendum.
Kilonzo Junior spoke in Makueni on Sunday.
“We will need to scrutinize the referendum questions before any voting and the best time to have it is in 2020,” Kilonzo Junior said.
The senator said a referendum is necessary to address some pertinent governance and leadership issues.
He noted that there is need to reduce the rising wage bill.
Kilonzo Junior echoed the proposal to reduce the number of elective seats, but not scrapping off some of the positions from the constitution .
“I don’t agree with politicians calling for scrapping off of certain political seats, but we can have the number of representation reduced,” he said.
He proposed changes to the electoral laws.
Kilonzo Junior proposed that presidential election be conducted separately with other elective seats.
He at the same time opposed the proposal to create more political seats.
