According to Justice Maraga, he firmly believed the majority judgment that nullified President Uhuru Kenyatta's victory in 2017, adding that his faith could not allow him to be swayed.

“I’m a Seventh Day Adventist Christian and the bedrock of the doctrines of SDA, as is the case with other churches and faiths, is integrity in whatever one does.

"Though I am a weak and sinful human being, as everybody else is, I will always stand with my decisions, including the Supreme Court decision of September 2017 on the Presidential Election Petition,” said Maraga as quoted by the Standard.

Justice Maraga spoke at the Oxford Union Conference on Tuesday in the UK dubbed: ‘The quest for constitutionalism in Africa: a reflection on the interface between institutions, leadership and faith.’

So contentious was the judgement that President Uhuru Kenyatta and his team vowed to 'fix' the Judiciary after repeat polls. But a similar petition challenging Uhuru's win was thrown out by the Supreme Court.

In recent weeks, Maraga's deputy Philomena Mwilu, has accused the state of allegedly harassing her based on the 2017 election verdict. She's battling Mone laundering and fraud case that allegedly led to collapsing of Imperial Bank.

At the conference, Justice Maraga also questioned the integrity of Kenyan elections, arguing that the political elites are keen to keep the status quo.

“Three examples will suffice — failure to implement the gender equality principle under the Kenyan Constitution, failure to fight corruption and impunity and failure to hold credible elections,” said Maraga.
