Over 200 contracted nurses in Nakuru County held a peaceful demonstration on Thursday morning over the delay by the county government to employ them on a permanent basis.
Brandishing placards, the angry nurses claimed the county government of Nakuru has continued to neglect them and focus on other employees such as drivers and clerks.
They say their contract ended in July 2017 during the regime of former Governor Kinuthia Mbugua who at that particular time pledged to ensure they are permanently employed but that has not materialized.
Led by Christopher Mwangi, the nurses are now calling on the current administration of Governor Lee Kinyanjui to step in and ensure they are employed permanently.
They also questioned why they are being deducted for NHIF yet they cannot access the health services as their cards are not activated.
“We have been on contract for long despite a promise to have permanent jobs and that is why we want the current government of Governor Lee to come out and tell us our fate,” they said.
The contracted nurses who say they served and saved the county when the nurses employed on a permanent basis were on strike are now demanding that the county government of Nakuru steps into the matter.
They say they are ready to continue with their service to humanity as long as the county government employs them on a permanent basis like their colleagues in other counties.
“We are ready to serve the patients but the county should also consider us and ensure that we are employed on a permanent basis,” said the irate nurses.
The nurses have vowed to down their tools until the matter is solved and that they are employed on a permanent basis.
