The MCAs want the president to suspend the implementation of the 16% Value Added Tax (VAT) that has seen fuel prices go up.

The County Assembly Members say that common Kenyans are suffering as a result of the increased fuel prices.

“The President should order the suspension of the VAT and cushion Kenyans from harsh economic life,” Nyayo Highrise MCA Kennedy Oyugi said on Thursday.

Mr Oyugi said that millions of Kenyans have been affected by the increase in fuel prices.

He said that the President will taint his legacy if he does not suspend the VAT.

"The increase in fuel prices is hurting and we ask him (the President) to intervene and help poor Kenyans,” Sarang’ombe MCA Lawrence Otieno said.

Otieno accused Treasury Cabinet Secretary (CS) Henry Rotich of rushing to implement the VAT without consultations.

He claimed that the CS is not serving the interests of Kenyans and should be sacked.

The 16% VAT that came into force on September 1 has seen fuel prices go up resulting to increase in bus fares in Nairobi.
