He won the seat in 2007 after trouncing the then incumbent MP Gideon Moi, son of Kenya's powerful ex-president Daniel Moi in a hotly contested election.

In 2013, Mwaita retained his seat on the then United Republican Party (URP) that formed part of the Jubilee .coalition. 

Since his entrance to the Kenyan politics, Mwaita has been an 'idol' of Baringo residents and touted to be the successor of Stanley Kiptis as Governor Baringo county in the coming polls.

He served in different committees of the National Parliament including being a member of the Departmental Committee on Finance, Planning and Trade.

The ex-MP also served as the Public Investments Committee (PIC) and Library Committee in the 10th and 11th Parliament.

His immense contribution in the agriculture sector has influenced and received support and endorsement of the Baringo people propelling him to vie for the gubernatorial position.

Mwaita has received accolades for his agricultural initiative in the county and the water projects he per takes in helping solve the water problem amongst his county men and women.

Sammy Mwaita was a long-serving civil servant, rising from a junior officer to the position of Commissioner of Lands (2000-2003). 

While serving as the Commissioner of lands, he was instrumental in the gazettement of the Mau forest land to pave way for the issuance of title deeds to Ogiek squatters.

Mwaita was on record warning West Pokot governor Prof. John Lonyangauo against engaging in Baringo county politics.
