A middle-aged man from Friends village in Kegogi, Nyaribari Masaba in Kisii County shocked residents after he allegedly attacked his ageing mother over tea bonus on Friday afternoon.
Witnesses said trouble started when the man Emmanuel Nyagaka returned home from a drinking spree and demanded some money from his mother, Philomena Moraa.
"Nyagaka is a chang'aa addict. He asked his mother to give him money to buy chang'aa for his friends but, his mother refused which prompted the attack," said a neighbor Doris Nyabonyi.
"Neighbors responded quickly to Moraa's screams. Nyagaka tried to escape from his mother's house in vain," she noted.
Area chief Elvis Magato said the suspect was given a thorough beating from angry neighbors.
"The suspect injured his mother's left hand and her forehead but he got a tough beating from the public before they surrendered him to my office," said the chief.
Magato said he gave the suspect several strokes of canes before he ordered him to be reporting daily to his office.
"I will be keenly watching his movements for the days he will be reporting my office. Men fond of assaulting their parents must stop," he noted.
