Deputy President William Ruto has risen from a humble background in Kamagut village, Uasin Gishu county to be the second most powerful man in the country.
The self-proclaimed hustler attributes his success to hard work and loyalty.
He first appeared in politics during the 1992 general elections and twenty years later, he has become the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya.
DP Ruto’s journey in politics has not been a walk in the park. Here are three major events that made him more popular in the country, even earning him a place among the smartest politicians;
ICC case
Soon after the 2007/08 post-election violence experienced in the country, International Criminal Court (ICC) based in the Hague, Netherlands took over the investigations over the violence. Deputy President William Ruto together with other five Kenyans was named as the masterminds of the violence. The whole country expected a heavy court ruling against DP Ruto. After a long and numerous court proceedings, ICC declared that Ruto had no case to answer on April 6th 2015.
2010 referendum
DP Ruto led a team of leaders and Kenyans who opposed the 2010 proposed constitution. He funded and campaigned across the whole country against the then grand coalition government and other top politicians. Although the ‘yes’ team won, Ruto conceded defeat and this referendum proved his high game in politics. It is after the 2010 referendum that Ruto made his ambitions to rule the country open.
2013 and 2017 general elections.
During the two general elections, Ruto campaigned for President Uhuru Kenyatta and won. His then United Republican Party (URP) merged with The National Alliance (TNA) party to form the ruling Jubilee party. This earned the DP his position and he is looking forward to succeeding president Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022.
