The Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) Secretary General Moss Ndiema has been arrested following disruption of flights at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Wednesday morning.
The government has deployed officers from General Service Unit and Anti-riot police to calm the situation at the facility after workers decided to down their tools.
Reports on Citizen Digital indicate that six Kenya Airways (KQ) employees, whose identity is yet to be disclosed, have been injured in the chaos after police dispersed striking aviation workers.
The workers, who have opposed the takeover of JKIA by KQ, have affirmed that they will not report to work until their plight is addressed.
On Tuesday, Kenya Airports had declared the strike suspended before the workers defied the directive from the court.
“The strike notice dated 27/02/2019 by Kenya Aviation Workers Union stands suspended following issuance of an order of injunction by the Employment & Labour Relations court on 5/03/2019. We wish to assure the general public of normal operations at all our Airports,” KAA said in a tweet.
