Speaking during a Sunday service at the House of Grace church in Nairobi, the former Deputy Premier warned that the debate could further divide the country instead of unifying it.

He said that the issue has been fully taken by the political elite, leaving out Kenyans who are the direct victims, which might with time prove more disadvantageous in the future.

"As politicians, we do not have the monopoly on what ails the country. There are other Kenyans who have solutions to what affects the country.

"In fact, politicians are more of a problem than a solution in certain circumstances" he was quoted by the Nation.

He stressed on the need for the majority of Kenyans to be included in the constitutional amendment issue to avoid being subjected to useless changes.

"As we talk about changing the law, I want that 80 per cent of the population to be involved. In all these debates around the Constitution, and even in the framework of the Building Bridges Initiative, where is the face of the 80 per cent of Kenya’s population? Where is it?" he wondered.

The referendum push is being headed by opposition leader Raila Odinga.

The former Premier and team want among others, the expansion of the executive and a return to parliamentary governance system.
