The surgery, which was performed on Wednesday, last week, made the medical facility to enter the history books as one of the first public hospitals to use the advanced surgical technology.

Laparoscopy, also known as diagnostic laparoscopy, is a surgical diagnostic procedure used to examine the organs inside the abdomen. It's a low-risk, minimally invasive procedure that requires only small incisions.

According to a post on Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu's official Facebook page, the county government aided in the purchase of the machine used during the operation.

Waititu noted that the surgery was led by Director of Medical Services Dr David Ndegwa and assisted by a team of surgeons from the Kiambu county health department.

"The health department has also constituted a specialized team of doctors to enable them to perform more procedures with the aim of reducing congestion. The team intends to roll out more laparoscopic surgeries and also train more doctors in the procedure," reads part of Waititu post.

The outspoken governor also highlighted the benefits of performing laparoscopy procedures which include reduced congestion within the wards, minimal blood loss and no scars, reduced costs due to the short time spent in theatres, among others.
