2004,2008 and 2018 are probably the most successful years in Harambee Stars history.
In 2004, the stars played in the Afcon competition, the same tournament that the national team qualified during last year's qualifier matches.
But 2008 proved to be different in our soccer history. This is the time when Kenya climbed to position 68 in the FIFA rankings.
The then coach Francis Kimanzi only lost two away matches and won all the home matches finishing second in the group, only one point behind Guinea.
Kenya lost their opening match in Namibia 2:1 before winning 2-0 against Zimbabwe and Guinea at home.
The national team hit Namibia 1-0 at home making it 100% win in their home matches. In Harare, Kenya drew 0-0 with their hosts before loosing 3-2 to Guinea in Conakry.
The then Captain Dennis Oliech was among the top scorers in the qualifier matches with 4 goals to his name.
Kenya qualified for the final round but Coach Francis Kimanzi resigned due to what he termed as noncommittal FKF and frequent wrangles between his Club Chairman Bob Munro and FKF Chairman Mohammed Hatmi. Antionie Hey was hired but produced unconvincing results.
Since 2008 to date, Kenya has never risen to such position in the FIFA ranking.
