President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday openly differed with his deputy over what African Nations should focus on in order to outgrow the babyish steps they were left in by the colonial masters.
In what appears to capture the developing differences between President Uhuru and his deputy William Ruto, the former dismissed a position the latter had expressed in Uganda.
While receiving the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award during the Young Achievers awards ceremony in Kampala, Uganda on Sunday, the Deputy President said that Africa should overhaul its education system to equip their youth with skills rather than theory.
Ruto wondered what skills such subjects like History equip the young people with.
“For what shall it profit a man to know when Vasco Da Gama reached Malindi, or when Henry Morton Stanley discovered the mouth of River Congo, unless that young person is acquainted with the science of crop production, or electricity generation, or the art of design?” Ruto said.
The comment seemed to rub Uhuru the wrong way and was forced to respond on Wednesday during his father’s 40th memorial service telling off the DP.
“Some of my colleagues say that history has no relevance. I believe history has great relevance. A nation that has no history is a nation that does not have a soul, because otherwise, you are no different than an animal who just wakes up, wants to eat, then sleep. History is what makes you different from beasts,” Uhuru said.
