Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Hajji has lamented that investigations of high profile cases has left them exposed to threats from senior figures.
Haji said detectives in such cases are living in fears as they receive threats every day in efforts to make them back off.
Speaking during a meeting on Wednesday, May 29, to brief religious leaders on the war on corruption progress, DPP said trying to nail those involved in big scandals is not easy.
“Officers prosecuting high-profile cases are being intimidated. They say they are being followed home, receiving phone calls and being tracked. Some of their homes are even being broken into,” Haji was quoted by the Standard.
During the function, Haji also revealed that they had set up a system where suspects could admit stealing public funds and be fined without going through the courts popularly known as plea-bargains.
“ODPP officers prosecute everything under the sun, from corruption to witchcraft. If you steal Sh20 million, you will be fined Sh60 million - thrice the amount you stole,” he revealed.
Anglican Archbishop Jackson ole Sapit hit out at certain religious leaders for ‘worshipping’ those with money. “We must stop idolising those with money and power,” he said.
