The Kikuyu Council of Elders has joined the ongoing debate revolving around Deputy President William Ruto and his 2022 presidential bid.
Speaking on Monday, the elders echoed recent remarks by the ruling Jubilee Party Vice Chair David Murathe.
Murathe has since cautioned Ruto against expecting an automatic backing from Central Kenya in the race.
Speaking during a prayer meeting in Nyeri, Council National Chair Wachira Kiango said that the region has no agreement with anyone regarding the much anticipated poll.
He rubbished fresh allegations that there was meeting to seal a deal that the region would back Ruto for supporting President Uhuru Kenyatta's 2013 and 2017 successful bid 6 years ago.
"There was no such meeting because we do not wish to mix ourselves with politics. We are focused on fostering unity," he told the Nation.
Speaking during the Maragoli Cultural Festival in Vihiga on Wednesday, Murathe hinted that the region and the Jubilee Party might support a candidate from Western Kenya instead of Ruto.
This remark has been met with opposition and condemnations from Ruto's side, with the DP's allies bashing Murathe and accusing him of peddling confusion into the party.
Ruto's lieutenants have maintained that the supposed agreement between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Ruto should be honored.
Ruto is the Deputy leader of the Kenyatta-led side.
