It is no longer news to hear that a Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) student has been stabbed to death while on his/her way to or from the institution by marauding thugs trying to snatch their phones and other valuables.
However, this list of victims of insecurity within the proximity of this institution of higher learning seems like it will continue growing if a recent revelation by one local media house is anything to go by.
The gangsters behind all the stabbings and muggings around this area say that despite losing some of their accomplices to mob lynchings, they are not about to abandon their criminal activities.
They reveal that their thuggery is informed by a strong urge for hard drugs which is a costly venture.
To get ‘high’, they say, one has to spend at least Sh2,000 per day.
“Two sniffs of heroine go for Sh150. To get high, we usually lace it with bhang, which is also our main source of income when we are not stealing,” one gangster identified as Bazenga recently told Capital FM.
It is in this state of mind that the gangsters usually in groups of 10 will hit the streets armed with daggers and penknives mostly on weekends when most of the students are partying.
"Once settled on a prey there is no turning back. It is either their way or ours, we can get killed but that has never scared us," Bazenga's accomplice identified as Rider is quoted as saying.
According to these thugs who have left many families in tears and endless grief, "we never commit any wrong, we are just hustling".
