An 18-year-old secondary school student has died in a suspected botched abortion attempt.
The Form One student reportedly developed complications after attempting to procure the abortion in Sori, Migori County.
She later developed complications while in school and was rushed to Sori Lakeside Hospital where she succumbed.
Doctors at the facility said that the student attempted to procure an abortion at another medical facility within the town.
They added that she had lost a lot of blood in the process of her septic abortion attempt, which resulted in her deteriorated condition.
One of her teachers said that the deceased already had two children, and the three-month-old foetus would have been her third.
The teacher added that the girl had spent close to four years at home after sitting her Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams as she cared for her babies.
Doctors at the hospital removed the foetus which has since been buried at the girl's home.
This comes at a time when health centres in the area are on the spotlight for allegedly helping teenage girls procure abortions, most of them being secondary school students.
