Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria has been making headlines ever since he claimed President Uhuru Kenyatta has neglected his Mt Kenya backyard in terms of development.

To keen observers, this is a clear indication that the MP is seeking to build his national profile as the 2022 polls draw closer.

In order to lead or be considered for position of leadership by the electorate in Kenya, you must be visible to them. As a result, Kuria seems to be adhering to three of the 48 laws of power in his quest to take over the mantle for Mt Kenya leadership from President Uhuru.

1. He courts attention at all costs

In January, rumours circulated that Kuria had tendered his resignation as a member of parliament for Gatundu South. This came after he castigated the president for neglecting his vote-rich backyard in favour of a region that did not vote for him.

Though he later came out to dismiss the reports, this could be interpreted as a move by a man who wants to court attention at all costs. He wants to be in the limelight. The other day he announced that he would vie for the presidency come 2022, a move that will further elevate his political profile.

2. He has not committed to anyone

The greatest flaw of a leader is betrayal as it is considered an unforgivable sin. To avoid this, a leader has to avoid committing to someone then changing their mind later when the tides are against them. It is for this reason Kalonzo Musyoka is considered a watermelon. For Kuria, he has remained coy on who he will vote for in 2022 or who he will pick as his running mate after announcing his presidential bid. Consequently, he is doing his own thing without the burden of commitment hanging on his shoulders.

3. He has entered action with boldness

Kuria, quite admittedly, has entered the political scene with boldness. The vocal MP is not one to mince his words. He is also not afraid to criticise his fellow politicians regardless of the position they hold, just as he did when he talked of neglect by the president. In politics, the timid never go far. It is the arena of the bold, and Kuria is one of them.
