A video of DP William Ruto addressing maize farmers at his North Rift backyard has elicited sharp debate with activist Samuel Okemwa not taking chances to take Ruto to task.
In the video, Ruto seems to suggest that maize farming has lost relevance, thus urging locals to shift to something else like avocado farming.
"China doesn't want maize, the market is changing. Let us try something else like avocado. A person who is not ready to change is just a fool," he said.
But the Gusii born activist now based in Canada has taken offense in the remarks, terming them demeaning not only to Kalenjins but also to maize farmers in Nyamira.
"Ruto has just called Kalenjins fools. He has also called farmers from Nyamira and other regions fool! He wants them to stop planting maize because he has a farm in Congo.
"He wants to create shortage so that he can supply in local markets. He's a liar. This is a strategy to create monopoly besides plotting for raw materials for his Botswana avocado factory," he fired.
Over the weekend, legislators from North Rift led by Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter revealed about Ruto's 500,000 Ha of maize in Congo.
Mr Okemwa besides his fierce criticism on National Government, is a persistent headache to Governors John Nyagarama and James Ongwae.
He has often accused the two of gross incompetence and even pushed for their ouster over sluggish development.
